WHAT IS A “HAWAII CERTIFIED PEER SPECIALIST?”

We are particulary proud of our Hawaii Certified Peer Specialists. He or she is a mental health consumer who is well along in their Recovery, is doing very well, and has taken and passed the State Certification Class.  Any consumer is already “Qualified” to work just by being a consumer, and passing the test!  The Peer Specialist adds a valuable point of view to the Recovery Team—The viewpoint of the mental health consumer.  During Recovery Team discussions, the Peer Specialists always remind us “non-consumers” how challenging it can be to be diagnosed with a mental illness.

OTHER CHALLENGES:

CES became “CER-Community Empowerment Resources” in January of 2012 due to the fact that we became a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization. This was a major victory for CER as we felt that the chartitable nature of our work was better suited as a non-profit.
In order to serve our consumers better, in September 2012 CER underwent a major re-organization into 4 small teams. This allows Team Leaders to more easily monitor each client on their teams and ensure that no one “falls through the cracks.”
Thanks to AMHD and the Hawai’i Department of Health granting more service time on a monthly basis, CER was able to lower the Case Manager’s caseloads. This also helps us serve our clients better because many need more than the standard 3.5 hours per month of assistance.
